Testicular Ultrasound

Testicular Ultrasound uses sound waves to generate pictures of the testicles and nearby tissues. This specific ultrasound assists with assessing disorders of the testicles and scrotum. Testicular ultrasounds help diagnose masses in the area. Furthermore, they can evaluate trauma, persistent pain, and infertility issues. Not only can doctors evaluate conditions with the use of testicular ultrasounds, but the procedure is very safe and does not expose the patient to radiation.

Testicular Ultrasound: What to Expect

Patients often find themselves wondering what to expect during an ultrasound scan. First, the doctor will place gel on the testicles and scrotum. Next, a transducer (probe) goes back and forth over the gel. During this process, high-frequency sound waves travel through the transducer and the gel. The probe captures the sound that travels back. Finally, these sounds are captured on a computer to create detailed images ( ) It is important to note, most testicular ultrasounds take no more than 15-30 minutes from start to finish. At the completion of the scan, a radiologist will read the images and generate a report. The referring doctor will read the report and determine the next steps.

Testicular Ultrasounds: Patient Cost

Often, patients who need Testicular Ultrasounds have a difficult time getting in for the scan at an affordable price. Insured patients face out of pocket costs and uninsured patients do not know where to find a facility that will perform the scan. Both of these situations cause unnecessary wait times and unrealistic costs making it almost impossible to get the scan. Insured high -deductible patients should expect to pay anywhere from $250 – $2000 for this Ultrasound scan. Alternatively, a free-standing imaging center is a great option for patients needing this scan. At one of these centers, folks typically pay $120 – 300 for this scan. These facilities often accommodate same-day appointments, offer extensive cash-pay discounts, and offer quick turnaround on imaging reports.
